Policies

Collections Policy

A team responsible for devising a Collections Development Policy has been formed. Under discussion are the following topics:

  • material selection and acquisition
  • replacement of worn out or lost materials
  • removal of materials no longer needed in the collection
  • planning for new collections or collection areas

Preservation Policy

Preservation is a core function of the Library and, using available resources, the Trustees seek to preserve the archives and printed collections in their care in secure storage in accordance with the best professional practices to ensure that they are available, not only for current readers, but also for future generations to consult.

There can be no access without preservation so it is essential to involve readers, now and in the future, in the work of the library. Readers help to preserve the written heritage by careful handling of manuscripts, archives and books and may be asked to report to a member of staff if they think that any specific item requires professional attention from the preservation or library staff. Good communication between staff and readers is vital for the future of the library.

Conservation Policy

The Library has a ‘minimum intervention’ policy which means that every attempt will be made not to alter the original structural features of printed books, manuscripts or paper documents. Treatments are carried out to stabilise and preserve fragile and deteriorating material with the utmost regard to the historical importance of the items.

Building Maintenance Policy

The Trust has elected a small team composed of two trustees and three members of staff including the accountant, caretaker and conservator who regularly meet to discuss issues relevant to maintaining the fabric of the building.
