The Portrait of the Reformers

Congregational Library

Group portrait of Protestant reformers, one of many paintings of the same subject. Our copy used to be kept in the schoolroom of the Abbey Congregational Church (now U.R.C.), Romsey, Hants. It was rumoured to have come from Moyles Court, Ringwood, Hants., the home of Lady Alice Lisle (1617-85), who was sentenced to death by Judge Jefferies for harbouring fugitives after the defeat of the Monmouth Rebellion.

TOP ROW, from left to right:

Johann Heinrich Bullinger (1504-75)
Jerome Zanchius (1516-90)
John Knox (c.1513-1572)
Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531)
Peter Martyr [Pietro Martire Vermigli] (1500-62)
Martin Bucer (1491-1551)
Jerome of Prague (c.1370-1416)*
William Perkins (1558-1602)

SLIGHTLY BELOW TOP ROW, at right:

John Oecolampadius (1482-1531)

AT THE TABLE, from left to right:

John Huss (c.1372-1415)
Philipp Melancthon (1497-1560)
Martin Luther (1483-1546)
John Calvin (1509-64)
Theodore Beza (1519-1605)
John Wycliffe (c.1330-1384)

*In many versions of the group, Jerome looks like an afterthought, being squashed in and painted more faintly than the others, and looking rather weird and ghostly as a result.

A silhouette of Rochemont Barbauld (c.1749-1808)

Anna Laetitia Barbauld, née Aikin; (20 June 1743 – 9 March 1825)

The silhouette was cut by Anna Laetitia Barbauld, the wife of Rochemont Barbauld, and is the only known extant example of her work. It has been generally thought that she was an amateur painter of silhouettes but this example of her work shows a work cut with scissors.

Isaac Watts (1674-1748)

See the archive catalogue  for a fuller description of the Watts painting.  At present we are raising funds to restore this painting but more is needed. It is on our list of 'high priority  conservation' works of art.  Clearly the Watts painting has a value far beyond financial considerations alone. It is of great cultural significance and we welcome your interest.
